Here is a tutorial that will show you how to make a beautiful wallpaper for your widescreen (16:10) PC monitor from a vertical movie poster (portrait).
You should imagine any case where you attempt to put a movie poster (usually a portrait image) as your desktop background picture, you would get an ugly centered movie poster with plenty of black borders around it, as you are using a “portrait” image as your desktop background.
But if you follow instructions of my tutorial you will be able to make a cool wallpaper from the movie poster of your widescreen wallpaper choice, without any blank spaces.

- Use GIMP to Open Movie Posters:
Alternatively, if you already have one on your computer, you can open it in Gimp if you have a movie poster from a website.
- Click on the image > Canva Size:
When you have the movie poster open in GIMP, click on Image and then select the size of the canvas.
- Increase Width Image:
To change the canvas size, click the * up arrow button until you have the image width like that of three movie posters.
- Slightly increase Height:
You may want to increase the height of the canvas a bit to give yourself a little more room.
- Click on the Centre:
Then click here if you wish for the poster to be automatically centered in the new canvas dimensions.Finish by clicking here.
- Duplicate layer:
The layer can be duplicated by right-clicking it and selecting Duplicate.
Using this duplicate layer, you will be able to cover the entire background of the wallpaper.
- Scale layer:
To scale a layer, click Layer, then Scale Layer.
- Enter in New Width:
The width of the picture is in pixels, so enter the wallpaper width so that the layer will cover the entire wallpaper background.
- Dark Background:
You can darken the layer (wallpaper background) by clicking Colors, then Brightness Contrast.
- Drag the Brightness Cursor to The Left:
The brightness cursor can be dragged to the left to reduce brightness so that the main centered poster can be seen better.
If you need to save your image somewhere on your computer, you will need to click File then Export As, then type in a name with “.jpg” at the end to save it as a JPEG image (the best image format for creating wallpapers).

How to Change Widescreen wallpaper Resolution:
If you run a business or spend a lot of time in front of the computer, your wallpaper is an essential part of your desktop, and can even make your day, if you spend a lot of time in front of it. It is also important that if you are launching presentations from your computer, the wallpaper should be a professional one such as your company’s logo. You can use Windows to adjust the resolution of your wallpaper to make sure it fits correctly on your screen.
- The taskbar can be accessed by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting “Show the Desktop” to minimize all open windows instantly.
- You can open the Personalization section of the Control Panel by right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop and selecting “Personalize”.
- To access the Desktop Background section, simply click the link entitled “Desktop Background”.
- You can change your wallpaper resolution by clicking the “Picture Position” dropdown list, and then selecting an option from the list. By choosing “Stretch”, the image will be stretched to fit your desktop. If the image on your screen has a different ratio than your screen’s, it will stretch and crop the image to fit your screen. Choosing “Fit” will fit the image on your desktop and, if its ratio differs, it will show a black border surrounding it. Tiling is a method of filling the entire screen with small images in a repeating pattern. This option places the image on the desktop in the middle of the screen and surrounds it with a black border if it does not fit.
- The changes will be saved when you click the “Save Changes” button.
